Purpose

To collect records supporting the research needs of those studying Hip Hop culture. The four 'elements' of Hip Hop culture include MC's, D.J’s, Break dancing , and Graffiti.

Language

The collection is predominately in English, with exception to international print materials that pertain to Hip Hop culture.

Geographical Areas
Due to increased interest in this cultural phenomenon the collection is international in scope. The origins of Hip Hop are in the United States and attention will be given to the regional influences of Rap music.

Chronological Periods
The time period for collected materials will be from 1975 to current date.

Arrangement
The database will use Library of Congress Subject Headings as its primary organizational arrangement and method of record description. Numerous fields will be available for searching, including author, title, publisher, subject headings, material type, and, of course, keyword.

Types of Material
The following material types will be included in this database: Monographs, Periodicals, Theses and Dissertations, Bibliographies, Discographies, Audio/Visuals, Encyclopedias and Dictionaries.
